Rising Above Odds: The Story of Wushu Champion Zahoor Ahmed Achakzai

By Prof. Muhammad Javed Sarparah

It is often said that man is the architect of his own fate. Success is rarely a stroke of luck; it is forged when determination meets unyielding hope in the face of adversity. The world is full of individuals who turn the impossible into reality through sheer grit, becoming icons for their communities. Among such inspiring figures from Balochistan is Zahoor Ahmed Achakzai, a national legend in the martial art of Wushu.

Born in District Chaman in 1980, Zahoor’s introduction to Wushu was entirely accidental. At just eight years old, he accompanied his brother to a local training facility and was instantly captivated by the discipline. That initial spark led him to join the Baldia Wushu Academy in Chaman, setting the course for a lifelong journey.

Over the years, Zahoor turned his passion into a full-fledged career, eventually representing Pakistan WAPDA domestically and the Pakistan Wushu Federation on the international stage. His path was far from easy; navigating financial hurdles and a lack of official government backing often brought moments of deep frustration. Yet, his perseverance remained unshaken.

When asked about his competitive journey, Zahoor smiles, noting that while he can no longer count the exact number of matches he has fought, every single medal holds a distinct place in his memory—starting with his very first silver medal back in Chaman.

His international track record speaks volumes of his caliber:

  • 2014: Bronze Medal – Fajr Friendship Cup (Iran)
  • 2015: Silver Medal – West Asia Wushu Championship (Iran)
  • 2016: Silver Medal – 12th South Asian Games (India)
  • 2017: Bronze Medal – Islamic Solidarity Games (Azerbaijan)
  • 2017: Gold Medal – Pak-Afghan Friendship Championship (Pakistan)
  • 2017: Ranked 5th Globally – 14th World Wushu Championship (Russia)
  • 2018: Gold Medal – South Asian Wushu Championship (Pakistan)
  • 2018: Silver Medal – SCO Wushu Championship (China)
  • 2018: Silver Medal – Fars Cup (Iran)
  • 2018: Ranked 5th – Asian Games (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Beyond his international repertoire, Zahoor has dominated national circuits, earning scores of titles across Pakistan and competing across Asia and Europe.

He credits his foundational training to his first coach, Amanullah Achakzai, and draws inspiration from martial arts icon Jet Li. Above all, he attributes his sustained success to the unshakeable trust and support of his family.

Looking ahead, Zahoor aims to establish a fully equipped sports academy for young talent, providing youth with a healthy, disciplined outlet to hone their skills. His message to the next generation remains direct and empowering:

“Your hard work will decide your future. Once you embrace relentless effort, no obstacle can stop you from achieving greatness. Keep striving with full devotion and passion.”
