For Advocate Sharmeen Rehman, a dedicated high court lawyer belonging to the Pashtun Khilji community of Quetta, the law is not just a profession—it is a powerful tool to shield the vulnerable, uplift women, and advocate for those whose voices are routinely overlooked.

Through an insightful conversation with Balochistan Stars, Advocate Sharmeen shared her personal journey, the inspiration drawn from her family, and her relentless commitment to human rights.

A Legacy of Resilience and Education

Sharmeen’s academic roots run deep within Quetta. After completing her schooling at Sacred Heart Girls High School and her intermediate education at Government Girls Degree College, she pursued her LLB degree at the University Law College, Quetta.

Her drive for justice was heavily influenced by her own home. Watching her mother—who had pursued legal education despite facing early-age marriage and traditional patriarchal norms—break barriers to educate her children left an indelible mark. Her mother’s struggle paved an easier path for the next generation, instilling in Sharmeen a lifelong passion for equity, independence, and legal advocacy.

Navigating the Legal Landscape

Entering the legal profession brought its own set of experiences. While early mentorship under seasoned seniors like Sir Asif Reiki provided a strong foundation, Sharmeen eventually took a bold step forward. Alongside her colleague and peer, Advocate Anum Khair, she established an independent legal practice.

Although a few traditional voices initially doubted whether young female lawyers could sustain an independent firm, Sharmeen’s resilience and dedication quickly proved them wrong. Today, her chamber serves as a safe space for women, children, and vulnerable groups seeking justice.

Championing Refugee Rights and Humanitarian Causes

Beyond standard corporate or civil practice, Sharmeen has dedicated a significant portion of her career to championing humanitarian causes, particularly refugee rights. Having previously worked with organizations focused on displaced communities, she has conducted numerous legal awareness workshops across Quetta, Chaman, and Killa Saifullah.

Her commitment to humanitarian law transcends the classroom. Notably, she played a pivotal role in filing constitutional petitions in the Balochistan High Court—including cases uniting separated families across borders and advocating for registered refugees facing displacement. Furthermore, as an active member of organizations like the Women Democratic Front, she continuously organizes seminars on women’s international rights and legal protections.

A Vision for the Future

Active in her community and passionate about youth empowerment, Sharmeen’s future goals are clear: to expand her legal support network for women and refugees, and to pave a smoother path for future generations of female lawyers in Balochistan.

Her core message to the youth is simple yet profound: Empower yourselves through education, and never let your failures define you—use them as stepping stones to learn and grow.
