Nargis Sumalani: A Beacon of Resilience and Justice for Balochistan’s Women

By Balochistan Stars Editorial Team

In the landscape of Balochistan, where societal norms and systemic hurdles often challenge the dreams of women, Nargis Sumalani stands as a testament to the power of resilience, education, and unwavering determination. A practicing lawyer in Quetta, Nargis’s journey is not just a personal success story—it is a blueprint for institutional change and a voice for those who have long been unheard.

From Obstacles to Opportunity

Nargis’s story is rooted in the deep support of her family. Married at the age of 16, before she had even completed her matriculation, she faced the societal pressure that often forces women to sideline their ambitions. Yet, with her husband’s encouragement, she turned these challenges into fuel for her pursuit of knowledge.

From completing her matriculation in a government school to obtaining degrees in Chemistry, Education (B.Ed), and Law (LLB), Nargis proved that the path to empowerment is paved with persistent learning. Her transition from a student to a legal practitioner, working alongside her husband in their firm, Amir and Nargis Law Firm, showcases the strength found in partnership and shared purpose.

Championing Institutional Reform

Nargis’s impact extends far beyond the courtroom; it is woven into the very fabric of Balochistan’s administrative systems. Her activism was born from personal pain. In 2020, when her mother suffered from a brain tumor, Nargis witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by medical negligence and the lack of accountability in the healthcare sector.

Discovering that Balochistan lacked the essential healthcare regulatory bodies present in other provinces, Nargis took a bold stand. She filed a petition in the Balochistan High Court in 2021, leading to the establishment of the provincial Healthcare Commission. Today, this commission serves as a vital safeguard, regulating hospitals and clinics, and providing a platform for citizens to voice grievances regarding medical malpractice.

Breaking Barriers for Women in Public Service

Her commitment to equality is equally evident in her fight for gender inclusion in provincial employment. When she noticed that recruitment for positions like Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar excluded women, she didn’t remain silent. Through relentless advocacy and legal petitions, she challenged these exclusionary practices.

Her efforts were instrumental in ensuring that women are now eligible for roles such as Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar, and Prosecuting Inspector. Her advocacy has opened doors for countless women, proving that merit, not gender, should determine one’s potential to serve the province.

A Vision for the Future

Nargis is currently leading the Women Lawyers Welfare Forum, an initiative aimed at supporting female legal practitioners and dismantling the barriers that keep women from pursuing careers in law.

Her vision is clear: to ensure that the women of Balochistan—especially those in remote areas—have access to the education, healthcare, and opportunities that were denied to previous generations. Reflecting on her own struggles, such as being discouraged from attending school after marriage, she is determined to change the restrictive policies that hinder women’s progress.

A Message to the Youth

To the youth of Balochistan, Nargis Sumalani’s message is one of hope and action: “Continue your education and keep working hard. It is through education alone that we can solve the challenges facing our province.”

Nargis’s journey is a reminder that when one person stands up for justice, the echoes of that courage can transform an entire society. Balochistan Stars is proud to document the journey of such a remarkable change-maker.
