Among these trailblazers is Dr. Fareed-ud-Din Agha, Balochistan’s first qualified plastic surgeon, whose lifelong dedication has transformed medical care across the province.

Pioneering a New Medical Frontier

Graduating with an MBBS in 1983, Dr. Fareed-ud-Din embarked on a medical journey defined by a deep-rooted passion for public service. At a time when specialized medical fields were virtually non-existent in Balochistan and general surgeons handled every type of ailment, he recognized the urgent need for advanced sub-specialties. Guided by his desire to master a complex field, he pursued his FCPS, officially becoming Balochistan’s first-ever fellow in plastic surgery.

Reflecting on his calling, he shares that medicine is much more than a profession—it is a sacred responsibility. “If a doctor carries genuine empathy for human suffering, there is no greater noble pursuit, combining personal dignity, professional fulfillment, and spiritual reward,” he notes.

Building Foundations: From Bolan Medical Complex to Dedicated Burn Units

Returning to Quetta, Dr. Fareed faced a public that initially misunderstood plastic surgery, often confusing it with cosmetic alterations rather than reconstructive healing. Through sheer dedication, awareness, and meticulous patient care, that perception changed. Waiting lists at the Bolan Medical Complex (BMC) stretched across months as patients flooded in from every corner of the province.

Recognizing the devastating frequency of domestic burn accidents—especially during harsh winters—he spearheaded the establishment of a dedicated burn unit at Bolan Medical Complex, building a 60-bed department that has saved countless lives over the years.

Healing Smiles: Free Treatments at Akram Hospital

After retiring from government service in 2016, Dr. Fareed’s mission did not slow down. Partnering with an international organization focused on free reconstructive care, he established a specialized initiative at Akram Hospital in Quetta.

Focusing heavily on children and individuals born with cleft lips and palates, his team has successfully performed between 4,000 to 6,000 completely free surgeries. From room charges and surgical fees to anesthesia and post-operative medications, everything is provided at zero cost to the patients. Unlike government hospitals where waiting lists can take months, patients arriving at his clinic are typically scheduled for surgery within a day or two.
