The Legacy of Precision and Perseverance: Akhtar Khan Tareen’s Journey in Taekwondo

By: Ahmed Jahangeer Khan

The word Taekwondo translates literally to “the way of the foot and the fist”—a discipline centered on using one’s body with absolute purpose, precision, and harmony. Recognized globally as one of the most dynamic combat sports, Taekwondo commands millions of followers across continents. Yet, beyond the international arenas and shiny medals lies a raw story of sacrifice, devotion, and an unyielding willpower that defies traditional expectations.

This is the story of Akhtar Khan Tareen—a legendary figure from the rich soil of Quetta, Balochistan, who chose the grueling path of a warrior to become truly unstoppable.

The Spark of a Champion

Born on January 1, 1976, Akhtar’s athletic journey did not begin on the Taekwondo mat, but on the football pitch. Like many young boys in Quetta, his initial passion was football. However, destiny shifted when his uncle, Alam Khan Tareen, recognized a deeper athletic potential in him and introduced young Akhtar to a visionary mentor: the legendary coach Abdul Khaliq Dotani.

In 1988, at the fragile age of nine, Akhtar stepped into the Idara-E-Sakafat Hall in Satellite Town, Quetta. That moment marked the beginning of an era. Under the exclusive and rigorous mentorship of Coach Dotani, a young boy’s raw energy was sculpted into the mindset of a national champion. Balancing his relentless training regimen with academics, Akhtar also successfully pursued higher education, earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree.

Rise to National Prominence

The true test of his grueling practice came in 1992 at the National Games in Lahore, where a young Akhtar secured his first-ever bronze medal. That victory ignited a fiery streak that spanned nearly two decades. From 1992 to 2010, he competed across 13 National Games, establishing absolute dominance on the mat.

His exceptional talent drew immediate attention from Pakistan’s elite sports departments, including Pakistan Police, the Pakistan Army, and WAPDA. Following the strategic guidance of his lifelong mentor, Coach Dotani, Akhtar formally joined WAPDA in 1999—a partnership that allowed his professional career to reach new heights.

Over the course of his athletic peak, Akhtar proudly represented Pakistan on the international stage, competing fiercely in Korea, Thailand, Nepal, Iran, and Sri Lanka, and raising his nation’s profile in Asian martial arts.

Beyond the Mat: A Multi-Talented Legacy

In 2010, after twenty-two years of fierce competition, Akhtar hung up his chest guard and stepped back from active fighting. But his drive to excel never diminished. Demonstrating extraordinary adaptability, he shifted his focus to Cue Sports and emerged as a formidable snooker player, competing at the high-stakes Snooker Master Cup in 2016.

Yet, his true calling post-retirement lay in coaching. Akhtar transitioned seamlessly into mentoring the next generation, channeling decades of ring experience into shaping future champions.

When asked about his ultimate inspiration, Akhtar’s answer is uniquely grounded: he views his own journey as his primary benchmark. For him, self-mastery and leaving a legacy that outlasts time are the ultimate pursuits of any true athlete.

“Enlighten your country’s name and wave the green flag around the whole world, so the world learns who we truly are.”
