Dr. Farkhana Kiyani, a dedicated medical professional hailing from Kharan, has carved out a unique space for herself as the first female Gastroenterologist in the entire province of Balochistan. Her journey is not just a testament to her individual perseverance, but a source of immense pride for our region.

A Foundation Built on Purpose

Dr. Kiyani’s path to medicine was paved with early inspiration. Growing up in a family of medical professionals, the profession felt like a natural calling. After completing her foundational education in Quetta and graduating from the Bolan Medical College (BMC), she went on to pursue rigorous training in internal medicine, eventually honing her expertise at the prestigious Aga Khan University.

Reflecting on her choice of specialty, Dr. Kiyani recalls her house job experiences in gynecology. “I noticed that many women felt a distinct hesitation when visiting male gastroenterologists,” she shares. “I realized then that there was a critical need for female representation in this field.” Driven by a commitment to serve her homeland, she returned to Quetta in 2019 to bring advanced clinical care directly to the people of her city.

Global Expertise, Local Impact

Dr. Kiyani’s impact transcends local clinics. Her pursuit of excellence has taken her to over ten countries, where she has proudly represented Pakistan and Balochistan on global platforms. As an elected member of the Climate Committee for the World Gastroenterology Organization and a recipient of multiple “Young Investigator” and “Best Abstract” awards in countries like Japan, China, and Brazil, she has proven that talent from Balochistan is world-class.

Yet, despite her international accolades, her true fulfillment comes from the relief she provides to patients at home. By offering specialized procedures like endoscopies locally, she spares families the physical and financial burden of traveling to Karachi or Lahore. “The prayers you receive when you treat a patient in their own hometown,” she notes, “are incomparable to any award.”

A Message to the Daughters of Balochistan

For Dr. Kiyani, the journey was not without its challenges. Operating within a traditionally male-dominated field, she faced skepticism and had to work twice as hard to build the trust of her patients. However, through the unwavering support of her parents, brothers, and husband, she overcame these obstacles.

Her message to the women of Balochistan—from Quetta to her home in Kharan—is clear: do not let societal pressure stifle your ambition. “If you dream it and work hard for it, it is not out of your reach,” she says. “Look at me—if I could do it, you can too.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Kiyani plans to further specialize in advanced endoscopic techniques like ERCP and EUS to elevate the standard of patient care in the province. As she continues her work, she offers a final, vital reminder to the public: “Please prioritize your health. Hepatitis B and C are prevalent in our region, but with early detection and timely medical consultation, many complications can be avoided.”
