Championing Justice and Human Rights: Advocate Ahmed Shah Babar’s Inspiring Journey from Quetta to London

In a society striving for institutional growth and legal reform, true progress is driven by individuals who return to their roots after scaling global heights. Advocate Ahmed Shah Babar, a dedicated practitioner at the Balochistan High Court and a proud voice from Machh, represents this spirit of resilience, intellect, and dedication.

In an exclusive conversation with Balochistan Stars, Advocate Ahmed shared his remarkable transition from an Urdu-medium academic background in Quetta to earning a prestigious Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International Human Rights Law and International Arbitration from the University of Law, London (Bloomsbury Campus).

A Foundation Rooted in Quetta

Ahmed’s educational journey is deeply tied to Balochistan. He completed his matriculation and intermediate education at Tameer-e-Nau Public School and College, followed by his Bachelor of Science (BSc) at Government Science College, Quetta. He later pursued his LLB and LLM (General) at University Law College, affiliated with the University of Balochistan, formally stepping into the legal fraternity in 2016 as a practicing lawyer in the Balochistan High Court.

Fuelled by a deep personal ambition and his late father’s dream for him to enter the legal profession, Ahmed set his sights high, aiming to bring international-standard expertise back to his home province.

Turning Global Opportunities Back Toward Home

In 2023, Ahmed was selected for the prestigious Balochistan Bar Council scholarship, an initiative established following the tragic events of August 8, 2016, designed to bridge critical professional gaps by sending local legal minds abroad for advanced education.

Choosing the University of Law in central London, Ahmed specialized in International Human Rights Law and International Arbitration. His academic excellence abroad opened doors to lucrative international opportunities, including membership offers from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and practice prospects in London and Islamabad. However, driven by a profound sense of duty to his motherland, he made the conscious decision to return to Quetta in early 2025.

“I chose to leave opportunities abroad behind so I could return and serve my province, my soil, and my country,” Ahmed reflected during the interview.

Vision for Balochistan’s Legal Landscape

Returning with global exposure, Advocate Ahmed is determined to modernize and diversify the region’s legal framework. His future roadmap focuses on two critical areas:

1. Advocating for Special Legislation: Introducing vital legal reforms and enhanced protective frameworks regarding human rights, while advocating for stronger quotas and structural appreciation to encourage greater female representation in a traditionally male-dominated legal sector.
2. Developing International Arbitration: Addressing the mounting backlog and prolonged pendency in conventional court litigation by introducing robust commercial and international arbitration frameworks to streamline justice.

Overcoming Barriers: A Message to the Youth

Reflecting on his journey, Ahmed pointed out structural hurdles faced by aspiring students in the region—notably the absence of specialized educational and visa consultancy firms in Balochistan to guide youth toward global academic opportunities. To overcome this, he has extended his personal commitment to guide and mentor young law graduates and students aspiring to study abroad.

Addressing the youth of Balochistan, Ahmed offered an empowering message rooted in his own experience as an Urdu-medium student who reached international milestones:

“Never let your background limit your dreams. With unwavering faith, consistent struggle, and patience, no force can stop you from achieving your goals. Today’s struggle builds tomorrow’s success.”
