Cultural Pioneer of Balochistan: The Enduring Legacy of Habib ur Rehman Panezai

Early Life and Artistic Roots

Born in 1951 in Khanozai—located 45 kilometers from Quetta—Habib ur Rehman Panezai comes from a distinguished family dedicated to public service and letters. His father was a practitioner of Eastern medicine (Hakeem) trained at Tibbiya College Delhi and Deoband, while his brothers also made significant contributions to literature and medicine:

• Anees ur Rehman: Renowned Brahui language poet and author of Dildar Bibi.
• Dr. Jameel ur Rehman: England-based orthopedic surgeon and literary contributor.

Panezai completed his foundational schooling at Government Central School Quetta, later earning his Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Education (BEd) degrees. Known affectionately to his audience as Chargull and Bailtoon, he began his broadcasting journey at just 13 years old on the PTV children’s program Zoozan e Gullaan.

Contributions to Television and Performing Arts

Over a career spanning several decades, Panezai established himself as a versatile actor, scriptwriter, and dramatist across Pashto, Balochi, Brahui, and Urdu television.

His major career highlights include:

• Broadcasting Portfolio: Performed in over 5,000 television dramas and authored numerous acclaimed scripts and serials.
• National Television & Mainstream Media: Contributed to popular national series across PTV, Geo TV, and Hum TV—including prominent projects such as Goonj (written by Zafar Mairaj), Aik Aam Mohabbat, and Dil-e-Nadaan.
• Awards & Honors: Winner of three PTV Regional Awards, including two for Best Actor and one for Best Writer.

Beyond screenwriting and acting, Panezai is an accomplished painter and singer. He views comedy as a form of social service, using humor to bring relief and entertainment to his audience.

Mentorship and Vision for Regional Youth

Recognizing the immense creative potential of Balochistan’s youth, Panezai advocates for structured institutional support to revive the regional arts and drama industry.

He encourages young creatives not to wait for traditional opportunities, but to begin honing their craft through short stories and digital filmmaking. Offering to mentor aspiring storytellers without financial compensation, Panezai stresses:

“Balochistan is rich with talent and high intellectual capability—our youth simply require proper direction and platform. The upcoming generation should start creating independent work and help rebuild our cultural narrative.”
