By: Ms. Madiha Sadiq

Balochistan is a land rich not only in vast natural resources, but in human talent—home to visionaries who consistently elevate their communities. Among these distinguished figures stands Dr. Syed Shams-Ud-Din, a pioneering medical professional and philanthropist currently serving as Professor and Head of the Dermatology Department at Bolan Medical Complex (BMC), Quetta.

The Journey to Medical Excellence

Born in District Pishin, Dr. Shams completed his early education locally before moving to Quetta to pursue his MBBS at Bolan Medical College. Observing the widespread, untreated skin conditions prevalent among local populations, he felt a strong calling toward dermatology.

Determined to bring specialized care to his home province, he moved to Lahore to undergo rigorous post-graduate training at Mayo Hospital, earning both his MCPS and FCPS qualifications. With this milestone, Dr. Shams achieved the historic distinction of becoming the first FCPS-qualified dermatologist in Balochistan.

Academic Leadership and International Recognition

Returning directly to Quetta to serve his people, Dr. Shams joined Bolan Medical College as an Assistant Professor. Through unwavering academic rigor, he advanced to Associate Professor and was eventually appointed Head of the Dermatology Department in 2011.

His academic and research contributions include:

  • Research & Publications: Authoring five primary research papers and co-authoring additional studies on regional dermatological issues.
  • Global Representation: Representing Pakistan across prestigious international medical panels, research conferences, and seminars in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Greece, Australia, and beyond.
  • Professional Honors: Recipient of the Fatimah Jinnah Award for outstanding medical service, election as President of the Pakistan Dermatologist Association, and designation as a recognized member of the American Laser Association.

Grassroots Humanitarian Work

Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Shams is a dedicated social reformer. Operating entirely on a self-funded basis without institutional financial support, he runs a free weekly skin clinic alongside dedicated colleagues to treat underprivileged patients across the region.

Firmly believing that education is the ultimate driver of social mobility, he actively supports primary and secondary schools in Balochistan by providing scholarships and learning resources to deserving students aiming for higher education.

Drawing inspiration from global humanitarians like Abdul Sattar Edhi, Dr. Shams offers a timeless message to the youth of Balochistan:

“For a young, energetic person, nothing is impossible. Struggle for your ambitions with a sincere heart, and success will surely follow.”
