Pioneer of the Mind: The Extraordinary Legacy of Prof. Dr. Ghulam Rasool

These iconic words by Alfred Adler perfectly capture the essence of psychotherapy. Yet, training the healers who guide patients through these silent battles is one of the most demanding tasks in medicine. Today, Balochistan Stars pays tribute to a master trainer and visionary mental health leader—Professor Dr. Ghulam Rasool.

The eldest of eight siblings, Dr. Ghulam Rasool hails from Zhob (formerly Fort Sandeman). His journey from a remote district to becoming a pillar of healthcare is a testament to unyielding dedication.

An Unbreakable Resolve

Dr. Rasool completed his early schooling in his hometown before pursuing medicine at Bolan Medical College (BMC), Quetta. Despite facing strong resistance from his family regarding his academic choices, his passion for learning never wavered.

Driven by a curiosity to understand human behavior and the complexities of the brain, he chose to specialize in Psychiatry—a field that was widely overlooked at the time. He earned his FCPS in Psychiatry through training in Karachi and Rawalpindi, becoming the first person from Balochistan to achieve an FCPS in this discipline. For this historic milestone, he was honored by the President of Pakistan.

Building Mental Healthcare from the Ground Up

Dr. Rasool began his clinical journey as a Junior Registrar at Sandeman Provincial Hospital, Quetta. Over the years, his academic and clinical excellence led to his appointment as Assistant Professor at BMC, later rising to the position of Professor.

A true pioneer, Dr. Rasool transformed mental healthcare infrastructure in the province:

• Expanding Infrastructure: He single-handedly elevated Balochistan’s psychiatric care facilities from a modest 2-bed unit to a state-of-the-art 150-bed institute.
• Integrated Care: He established a holistic treatment model bringing psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers together under one roof.
• Nurturing Talent: He has trained and produced at least 15 FCPS-qualified psychiatrists and 10 specialized psychiatric nurses for Balochistan.

Leadership and Public Service

Today, Prof. Dr. Ghulam Rasool holds several prestigious leadership roles, including:

• Executive Director: Balochistan Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Quetta
• Dean: Faculty of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, BUMHS Quetta
• General Secretary & Executive Member: Pakistan Psychiatric Association
• Member: American Psychiatric Association

Beyond administrative and clinical duties, Dr. Rasool regularly conducts free medical camps, leads mental health awareness drives across national media, and facilitates specialized training workshops for police officers, teachers, bankers, and civil servants.

Beyond the White Coat

Outside the clinic, Dr. Rasool is a man of diverse passions. He holds a keen interest in political science, is an avid nature lover with a passion for horticulture, and enjoys music and playing soccer in his leisure time.

Reflecting on the importance of guidance for the younger generation, Dr. Rasool shares a profound thought:

“Students must be given the freedom to explore the world and turn mirrors into windows. Early career counseling is essential to help young minds find their true calling.”

Bearing in mind Adler’s reminder that “the only normal people are those you don’t know,” society will always need the healing touch and visionary leadership of mentors like Dr. Ghulam Rasool. Balochistan Stars wishes him continued health, success, and fulfillment in his noble mission.
