The Journey of Miss Sumera Mehboob: Transforming Education in Balochistan

Educationists are not just traditional teachers; they are the visionaries who study, challenge, and reform how we educate future generations. One such inspiring leader is Miss Sumera Mehboob, a daughter of Balochistan who turned her vision for educational reform into a living reality through sheer determination and resilience.

Hailing from the rich soil of Khuzdar, Sumera completed her Master’s degree from the University of Balochistan. Her journey into the development sector began in 2003, when she moved from Khuzdar to Quetta for an internship with the Institute for Development Studies and Practices (IDSP). This one-year experience gave her a deep understanding of core development concepts. Over the next decade, she worked across various educational institutions and districts in Balochistan, closely observing local teaching strategies and gaining ground-level insights.

The turning point came in 2013, when World Learning (Washington D.C.) launched its Legislative Fellowship Program. Sumera submitted her vision for a transformative educational institute—and was selected. Armed with global exposure and practical knowledge, she established “The School of Scholars” in Khuzdar in 2014, with a dedicated focus on promoting girls’ education.

Building this dream was anything but easy. Coming from a traditional tribal background where female empowerment was often met with resistance, Sumera faced immense pressure from both society and traditional norms. Moving from one city to another, chasing her goals independently, required extraordinary courage. Yet, reflecting on those struggles, Sumera proudly acknowledges the naysayers—stating that their doubt only fueled her strength to prove what was possible.

Today, Miss Sumera Mehboob serves in key leadership roles across prominent platforms:

Her extraordinary contributions have earned her prestigious accolades, including the Women Empowerment Award, the Youth Development Award, and the Reason to Smile Award.

Driven by a continuous passion for learning, Sumera admits that her days feel incomplete unless she explores or learns something new. She credits her mother as her ultimate inspiration and source of strength.

Leaving a powerful message for the youth, Miss Sumera advises:

“Trust yourself. Map out your skills and focus on strategic growth. Don’t look for shortcuts—give yourself the time to grow through the process, and the results will naturally be extraordinary.”
